Pavement Preservation is a Growth Catalyst

Pavement Preservation, according to the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO) Standing Committee on Maintenance, is the sum of all the activities which provide and maintain serviceable roadways including corrective and preventive maintenance, as well as, minor rehabilitation. Pavement Preservation is the single best maintenance strategy that Agencies can employ to improve the condition their overall roadway networks. With stagnate funding and increasing costs the responsibility to best use taxpayer monies is getting tougher by the day. No longer can we afford the inefficient luxuries of the past. Ten-year paving cycles are in the rearview mirror and we must be proactive in keeping our transportation system functioning at a high level. It is no surprise that a healthy roadway network can have an effect on our nation’s, and individual states’, economies , but FHWA studies reveal that over 77% of roads in the US are maintained at the local level and the effect – both good and bad – that the condition of the transportation system has on local economies can be equally dramatic. With current paving cycles in many areas now beyond 30 years the solution is to keep our good roads good by utilizing the many techniques and treatments that Pavement Preservation has to offer.

"The right treatment to the right road at the right time" is the mantra of the preservation industry. If it sounds like common sense, it is! Spending money working on a road that is beyond repair is a waste of funds. The cost of major rehabilitation will be relatively the same over a short period of time and deferring this cost for 4-5 years allows the monies to be used to assure the roads that are in good shape stay that way. In turn, the roads properly maintained will not deteriorate to the condition which requires rehabilitation – saving even more money as an ongoing process.
