Chip Seal

Chip seals are quite versatile in their application. Accordingly, the type of emulsion selected varies as well. When upgrading gravel roads or resealing low volume rural roads, CRS-2 is, by far, the most popular choice. When aggregate choice or quality is limited, HF or High Float emulsions can be used to increase chip retention. As roadway traffic increases in volume, and the desired time for return traffic shortens, the emulsion type selected also changes. CRS-2p is typically selected as the polymer modified binder because it improves initial chip retention which facilitates getting traffic back to normal faster with less damage to the seal. When applying at night, as is typical for an under-layer application, or the demands of return traffic times are even shorter or aggregate choices are limited, CHFRS-2p is the product of choice. This uniquely designed emulsion blends the benefits of High Float emulsions with the rapid curing properties of a cationic system for optimal performance. As the roadway deteriorates beyond the capabilities of these systems to perform, PASS CR is the ultimate rejuvenating chip seal emulsion. The addition of a scrub broom, pulled by the asphalt distributor, and the selection of PASS CR for the binder allows roadways, in even severe distress, to realize the extended service life provided by chip seal treatments.
